As a child Katy Coburn was very interested in ‘things’ that her Granny Mac did. These things, at times, appeared to go against what should happen. Therefore they were magic. So Katy had a sneaking suspicion that her Gran was more than she appeared to be. She also wondered why her Gran took the trouble to show and tell her about such happenings. What Katy didn’t know was that she was being schooled for a somewhat unlikely and dangerous mission which she would undertake in the future.
As Katy grew older, the suspicion that her Gran was a witch grew until it was confirmed. In the meantime however, Katy still had her ordinary schooling to attend and a normal life to lead. This she did in the company of her two friends Jack and Lou. She also had to conform and fit in with her parents, Jennifer and Gilbert’s, idea of what their world should be and indeed was.
All that changes one summer when they go on holiday to Loch Ness where a series of events occur including a meeting with Oliver Ogg, Messenger of the Sea People. He tells Katy about a dolphin, Outboard, which is trying to communicate with her. Later on this dolphin saves her life and later still goes on to play a critical role in bringing her mission to a successful conclusion. Back from the holiday, the meeting with Oliver Ogg is reinforced through a CD Rom which Katy had received some time before. This CD wondrously transports them back to the Loch where they meet Sharfin who tells Katy that she is the chosen one. “Why me” puzzles Katy “and chosen for what?”
However to complete the task which she and her two friends have been set they must overcome certain difficulties. To enable them to successfully do so they have the help of certain items including a magic boomerang and light shaped crystals. Before they set out on their quest they are given training in how to fly a broomstick. They also benefit from the experience, wisdom and magic of certain Witches and Wizards, including Madame Vincibow, Calvenor (Chief Wizard) and Holsboum. They are also helped by Henry and Crabboy. Thus equipped the trio set out on the mission assigned to our heroine.
Within this half world they encounter certain enemies including the Kelpie but Katy is saved from its ‘clutches’ by Outboard. The three friends also come up against a race of people opposed to the task and to outwit these beings they have to use all the powers bestowed upon them.
After overcoming all sorts of perils, the adventuresome trio eventually encounter a monster entombed in an ice-age cave in the depths of Loch Ness. they must retrieve a silver egg from this monster. If they manage to do this, Katy must then transport the egg on her broomstick to the top of Ben Nevis which is the only place where it can hatch. In order to accomplish this the reflected light from seven silver salmon must coincide with the moon’s light at a certain time.
The reason why Katy was chosen to perform such a perilous task is because she is descended from a long line of powerful and distinguished wizards and witches. Such facts her mother (Granny Mac’s daughter, Jennifer) doesn’t want to know and her father (stuffy Gilbert) considers utter balderdash.
Katy Coburn and the Silver Egg is a trip through the magical world of the imagination culminating in the continuance of a myth or legend.
